Autumn driving carries risks

As fall settles in once again, now is a good time to remind Illinois drivers about the autumn driving hazards they face. Being aware and paying attention can make the difference between getting into a collision and avoiding an accident.

Below are some dangers motorists should avoid when driving on roads this fall in Illinois.

Fallen leaves

Autumn foliage can be quite beautiful this time of year, but when those leaves fall to the ground, they create hazards for drivers. Especially after it rains and they become wet, the slippery surface of the leaves can reduce the traction of your car's tires and make it harder to stop at intersections and for emergencies.

Shorter days

The sun sets earlier and the nights grow longer, but that doesn't always mean that kids are off the street. They could still be huddled in the road playing touch football or riding bikes. Drivers must be aware and adjust their speed accordingly.

October brings trick-or-treaters out in force as well, so it's important to slow down and pay attention to pedestrian traffic at all times.

Glare of the setting sun

Shorter days also mean that commuters face the glare of the setting sun each evening as they make their way back home. This can momentarily blind drivers to what is going on in the road ahead. Wearing sunglasses and adjusting your sun visors can reduce the glare of the sun a great deal.

Unstable weather conditions

Autumn in Illinois can bring everything from torrential rain to fog to sleet or even snow. Motorists must be prepared to navigate through all sorts of inclement weather conditions.

If you get into an accident caused by another at-fault driver, holding them liable for the damage they caused is the best path toward justice.
