1 dead in Tennessee boating crash; all survive on Texas lake

A Tennessee family from Hamilton County is mourning the loss of their beloved family member after a fatal boating accident occurred over the recent Labor Day weekend.

In the late afternoon hours of Sept. 5, a family of three was enjoying a recreational boating trip on Watts Bar Lake. For unspecified reasons, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) reported that the family's watercraft was involved in a single-vessel collision near the Blue Springs Marina.

The 55-year-old man died at the scene and his wife was evacuated by helicopter to UT Medical Center. The following day, she was reported to be in stable condition in the intensive care unit. A minor child was transported to the same facility by ambulance and released after receiving treatment.

Although details are scant in the above news item, because it was a single-vessel crash, there is likely no path to financial recovery for the surviving family members.

However, in cases like the recent debacle that occurred to many participants of the pro-Trump flotilla rally on Lake Travis in Travis County, Texas, liability could be shared by multiple irresponsible and negligent boaters.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities on the lake when speeding boaters in larger vessels created wakes that swamped five smaller boats. Those aboard were tossed into the water as they watched their boats sink to the bottom of the lake, according to a press release by the Travis County Sheriff's Office.

In all, the sheriff's office responded to 15 calls of boats that had been swamped and were in danger of sinking.

If you are injured in a boating accident that was caused by another boater's negligent actions, it's important to learn more about your right to sue for your damages and losses.
