Dehydration is a risk and could be a sign of neglect

Nursing home abuse is something that can, and does, happen in some nursing homes. It's unfortunate, but patients who rely on medical care and support may not receive even the basic attention that they need.

One of the red flags signaling that your loved one may be a victim of abuse is if they have consistent issues with dehydration in their nursing home. In nursing homes, the staff is meant to monitor how much patients are drinking. They often provide them with water jugs that have markings to see how much has been used. The staff is supposed to monitor intake to prevent illnesses from dehydration.

There are many signs of dehydration in the elderly. Some include:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Dry mouth
  • Low blood pressure, which can be exacerbated by medications
  • Confusion
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness

Sometimes, a lack of water in a person's diet can lead to a greater number of urinary tract infections or problems with their medications.

Drinking enough water is essential to keeping patients as healthy as possible. Monitoring intake is essential in a nursing home because many elders cannot tell when they're thirsty or may forget to drink regularly.

Severe dehydration can result in the skin shriveling, delirium, low blood pressure and other serious health conditions. If staff members are not monitoring your loved one's intake, then they could be putting them at risk of these serious side effects and complications.

If your loved one is injured due to dehydration, you may have a case of neglect on your hands. Our website has more on what to expect if you make a claim.
