What are some costs of auto accidents?

With all the automobiles on the roads today, it's no wonder that collisions are increasing. For those involved, the costs can be exorbitant.

One Esurance survey found that affected drivers typically spend over $1,000 in out-of-pocket expenses. That is in addition to the more than 20 hours they fritter dealing with issues related to their accidents.

If you have never been in a traffic accident, one may still be in the pipeline for you. It's estimated that 77% of motorists have experienced at least one accident. In fact, on average, a driver will have three or four wrecks during their lifetimes. Two-thirds of motorists who were in accidents had no liability for the wrecks, yet they had to expend both money and time getting things straight post-accident.

It's not a cheap proposition, either. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), auto accidents have an economic impact of as much as $871 billion every year.

You may think, "well, it's just a fender-bender." Think again, as 38% of those surveyed who had minor damage still needed to have their vehicles repaired.

Another 35% had their vehicles totaled. That is a really bad scenario for drivers who depend on their vehicles to get to and from work.

Another problem is that today's cars and trucks contain so many high-tech parts that are quite expensive to repair or replace. A regular bumper on a wrecked car could run you anywhere from $300 to $700 to replace. But a high-tech version fitted with cameras and sensors could start out at $1,000 and go upwards from there.

These costs are just for the damage to your car or truck. It doesn't even include a dime for the injuries that you suffered in the accident.

One way to recover from the financial assault of an auto accident is to file a claim for damages to hold the negligent parties liable for the injuries and damages they cause.
