Neglect can lead to injuries or death: Recognize and report it

There are different kinds of neglect that you should be aware of if you're going to place a loved one into a nursing home. Neglect may be intentional or unintentional, but it always results in the inadequate care of residents in a nursing home.

The National Center on Elder Abuse states that there are seven kinds of abuse that elders may experience in nursing homes. Of them, neglect and self-neglect are present.

Neglect is a difficult thing to imagine for most people. When you place a loved one into a nursing home, you would hope that the nursing staff would take their job seriously and provide for the elders in their care. Unfortunately, that doesn't always happen.

Whether intentional or unintentional, there are times when some patients don't get the care they need. Understaffing, staff members who don't like a patient or who intentionally skip caring for certain patients and other causes lead to this neglect.

How can you recognize neglect?

The good news about neglect is that it's relatively easy to recognize it in a short amount of time. If you see your parent in the nursing home once or twice a week, you may notice things like a lack of hygiene or that your loved one is wearing the same clothes they were at your last visit. You could see weight loss or notice that they aren't acting normally because of missing medications. These are all signs of neglect that you need to take seriously.

Neglect can lead to serious injuries or death, so you need to report it if you see it in a nursing home. Your action could help save your loved one from further pain and suffering.
