Medical malpractice insurance is a must before any surgery

It's a horrifying thought to think that a doctor or surgeon could be practicing without insurance. That's the nightmare one woman from Detroit is dealing with.

When she awoke from an outpatient plastic surgery procedure a month after it was performed, she realized her abdomen was open. She couldn't walk, either. The surgeon had accidentally cut into the bowel when he was performing liposuction on her. He injected fat straight into her sciatic nerve while doing a Brazilian butt lift, too.

As hospital personnel attempted to repair the damage that had been done, the woman had been placed in a medically induced coma. It took seven surgeries and four blood transfusions, but she regained consciousness. What was most horrible was that she owed over a million dollars, and even her own insurance didn't cover it all. She was left in this horrible condition while facing eviction from her apartment and losing her job.

The catch in the case was that her medical provider was practicing without medical malpractice insurance. She wasn't able to sue.

The high cost of medical malpractice insurance does sometimes mean that providers go without. Those who choose to go without insurance are 44% more likely to have been disciplined in the last decade and to have committed criminal offenses.

If you are going to have a medical procedure performed, it's essential that you make sure that your medical provider is insured. This malpractice insurance gives you the opportunity to sue with a better chance of recovering the compensation you need as you focus on your recovery from a botched surgery. You can pursue a claim even if the medical provider doesn't have insurance, but it may be more difficult to collect.
