Nursing home patients who struggle with dementia need a high level of care and assistance, sometimes around the clock. Any neglect is not just disrespectful to the patients, but it can also be very dangerous.

One issue that dementia causes is forgetfulness. In some cases, people with dementia forget to take their medication. Many of them have to set alarms and other notifications to make sure they know when to take it.

Even if patients do that, what happens if they take the medication and then forget they did? That could lead to an accidental overdose when they take it again a short time later. Care workers can help them with the schedule and monitor their medication intake to ensure that this does not happen.

Confusion is also very common. One women described it as a fog that made it hard for her to think.

In a nursing home, residents may be able to live safely even on bad days when this confusion consumes their thoughts. Without supervision, though, what happens if they leave the facility? Will they know how to get back? Wandering issues are a real problem, especially when people forget that they live at the nursing home and they honestly think they’re just trying to go home.

Again, staff members have to be aware of this, and they need to take the proper steps to make sure that residents are safe. If this does not happen, serious injuries and even death can occur. Neglect cannot be permitted. When it happens, family members need to know all of the legal options they have.
