What you should know about never events

When it comes to medical malpractice in Illinois, you may be under the impression that many events are due to small errors that lead to major complications. However, there is a growing number of medical malpractice incidents that involve mistakes so egregious they should never happen. These errors are often referred to as never events in the medical community. Even though there are checks and balances in place to prevent them, more and more patients suffer health injuries and complications and lose their lives to them every day.

For you to take measures to protect yourself against never events, you should learn more about them. Keep in mind that many medical mistakes are avoidable and preventable. Often times, medical professionals can increase their accuracy and reduce their rate of error by getting more sleep and paying more attention to their patients, their charts, medications and interactions.

Types of never events

Currently, there are several categories of never events. They include criminal, surgical, care management, device and environmental. For example, when a surgeon leaves behind tools in surgical sites or operates on the wrong site and patient, they are making a mistake that is entirely avoidable. Other examples of never events include:

  •        Patient abuse
  •        Improper medication administration
  •        Failure to adhere to sanitary and hygienic procedures
  •        Use of dirty and contaminated instruments

Many of these incidents cause catastrophic harm and injury to patients. Some individual need ongoing medical intervention, therapy, rehabilitation and lifestyle changes. Patients who are not able to overcome their health complications and injuries usually have shorter life expectancies because of their ordeals.

Getting health care staff, medical facilities and hospitals to admit their mistakes and accept accountability is still a major issue many malpractice victims encounter. If you suspect you have experienced a never event, get in touch with your doctor immediately to get treatment for complications. You may want to speak with an attorney to learn more about options to aid your recovery.
