Woman dies when nursing home neglect causes bedsore

Relationships between Illinois parents and children change as children grow, sometimes becoming strained and sometimes more tender. As parents age, adult children may wish to provide as much care as needed, but their own family obligations may prevent them from doing so. After an injury or during a prolonged illness, more intense nursing care may be required for an aging parent. However, the families may never expect their loved ones will become victims of nursing home neglect.

One family in another state faced this situation, and the results were tragic. After their 90-year-old mother fractured her right hip, she was admitted to a retirement center that offered continuing care. The family claims the medical facility allowed the woman to remain bedridden until her insurance ran out, then they discharged her. After spending 100 consecutive days in bed, the victim developed a massive bedsore on her lower back that became septic, causing infection to spread into her bowel.

When the family visited her at the nursing home, the woman was always on her back, so no one knew the sore had developed. However, hospital staff should have seen the sore when they bathed and changed her, yet apparently no one provided medical care. When the family took the woman home, they discovered the sore and immediately took her to the hospital, but it was too late. The woman died a short time later.

Patients often develop bedsores when Illinois doctors and medical staff fail to provide services critical to the health and recovery of the victim. When such bedsores result in fatal infections, family members must live with the thought that their loved one lay in pain for the last moments of his or her life because of nursing home neglect. While filing a lawsuit may not relieve that pain or bring a loved one back, it may certainly send a message that such negligence is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
